Level of zinc protoporphyrin (ZNPP) in red cells is a functional indicator of insufficient iron supply (iron deficiency) or deficient iron utilization (lead poisoning).

Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s), and send EDTA whole blood. Mix by gently inverting 6 to 8 times. If blood lead is also ordered, draw blood in a royal blue-top Monoject® trace element blood collection tube(s), containing EDTA as an anticoagulant.
