Important Note

The collection site should have the ability to place the specimen into a 37 degree water bath or incubator.  If this is not possible please refer the patient to a draw site able to process this test.   (any one of the hospital draw sites)

Methodology

Titration-Red Cell Agglutination at 4° C

Useful for detection of cold agglutinin disease, such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae, primary atypical pneumonia, and Raynaud’s disease.

Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a plain, red-top tube(s). (Green-top [heparin] tube, lavender-top [EDTA] tube, or serum gel tube is not acceptable. Contaminated, hemolyzed, or icteric specimen is not acceptable.) Allow specimen to clot at 37° C. Separate serum from red cells immediately after blood clots, and send serum refrigerated.
