Test Code LAB119 Electrophoresis, Protein, Serum

Additional Codes

46379

Reporting Title

Serum Protein Electrophoresis

Methodology

Helena, Agarose Gel Electrophoresis

Includes protein, total.

Useful for the detection of a monoclonal protein and for monitoring the size of the monoclonal peak.

Testing Algorithm:

If a discrete electrophoresis band is identified, the laboratory will evaluate the serum protein electrophoresis and, if necessary, perform immunofixation at an additional charge.

Performing Laboratory

OhioHealth Laboratory Services-RMH Special Testing

Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube(s). (Plasma is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated.

Note: A speckled-top serum gel tube (s) or a plain, red-top tube(s) is also acceptable.

Specimen Stability Information

Specimen Type Temperature Time
Serum Refrigerated 2 weeks
  Ambient  4 days
  Frozen  6 months

Specimen Transport Temperature

Refrigerate/Ambient OK/Frozen OK
