Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Preferred:
Serum
Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated. A speckled serum gel tube (s) or a plain, red-top tube(s) is also acceptable.
Alternate:
Plasma
Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s). (Green-top [lithium heparin] tube is acceptable.) ..

Hepatitis B core antibody (anti-HBc) appears shortly after hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). After HBsAg goes away and before hepatitis B surface antibody appears, anti-HBc may be only marker detectable. Anti-HBc does not occur with hepatitis B immunization.
