Cryptosporidium/Giardia Antigen Test

Methodology

Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA)

Useful to detect the presence of Cryptosporidium and Giardia specific antigens in stool specimens.

Note:  This is a sensitive EIA to screen for Cryptosporidium and Giardia  antigens that may be present in fecal specimens. These are the most prevalent parasites detected in this geographical area.

Specimen Requirements

Submit only 1 of the following specimens:

 

Preserved Stool

1. Submit 1 mL to 2 mL of stool in 10% formalin preservative or a Carey Blair collection container

2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), MR# or DOB,  date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.

Note:  Indicate preserved stool on request form.

 

Unpreserved Stool

1. Submit 1 mL to 2 mL of stool in a screw-capped, sterile container.

2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), MR# or DOB, date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.

3. Send specimen refrigerated. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Note:  Indicate unpreserved stool on request form.

Reference Values
