ALT originates primarily in the liver, but also in kidneys, heart, skeletal muscle, and other organs. It is elevated with hepatic disease, myocardial infarction, muscular dystrophy, and organ damage.
VWH Only:
ALT- reagent, when used in conjunction with SYNCHRON LX® System(s), UniCel® DxC 860i System(s) and SYNCHRON® Systems Enzyme Validator Set, is intended for quantitative determination of Alanine Aminotransferase Pyridoxal-5'-phosphate concentration in human serum or plasma. Use of this product, in conjunction with the SYNCHRON® Systems Enzyme Validator Set, will result in assay values which are compatible with the methods recommended by the International Federation of Clinical Chemistry (IFCC).
Performing Laboratory
OhioHealth Laboratory Services - RMH, BH, DH, DHC, DMH, GCMH, GMC, GMH, HMH, MGH, MH, OBH, PMC, SH, WECC and VWH Core Laboratories
Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Preferred:
Serum
Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.)
Note:
1. A specked top serum gel tube(s) or a plain, red-top tube(s) is also acceptable.
2. Indicate serum on request form.
3. Label specimen appropriately (serum).
VWH Lab Only:
- Tubes of blood are to be kept closed at all times and in a vertical position. It is recommended that the serum or plasma be physically separated from contact with cells within two hours from the time of collection.
- Separated serum or plasma should not remain at room temperature longer than 8 hours. If assays are not completed within 8 hours, serum or plasma should be stored at +2°C to +8°C for up to 48 hrs.
Alternate :
Plasma
Draw blood in a mint green-top (heparin) gel tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL of heparinized plasma refrigerated. (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.)
Note:
1. Indicate plasma on request form.
2. Label specimen appropriately (plasma).
