Reporting Title
CA 125
Methodology
Roche Diagnostics Electrochemiluminescence Immunoassay
Results from assays produced by different manufacturers may not be comparable
Useful For
Used to monitor therapy for epithelial ovarian cancer and to detect residual ovarian cancer in patients who have had first-line therapy. There are no standard reference units, therefore users should not make qualitative comparisons between different methodologies.
Performing Laboratory
OhioHealth Laboratory Services-RMH Special Testing
Specimen Requirements
Preferred:
Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube(s). (Hemolyzed specimen is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated. Sample is stable refrigerated for 14 days
Also acceptable:
1. A speckled-top serum gel tube (s) or a plain, red-top tube(s) is also acceptable.
2. Lithium Heparin plasma
3. Heterophile antibodies may interfere with this assay.
Collection Instructions:
1. Serum gel tubes should be centrifuged within 2 hours of collection.
2. Red-top tubes should be centrifuged and aliquoted within 2 hours of collection.

Reference Values
0-35 U/mL
There are no standard reference units, therefore users should not make qualitative comparisons between different methodologies. A low result does not necessarily indicate the absence of residual or recurrent ovarian carcinoma. An elevated result may be found in a small percent of healthy patients as well as those with non malignant conditions such as cirrhosis, endometriosis (stage II-IV), first trimester pregnancy, hepatoma, lung cancer, ovarian cysts, pancreatic adenocarcinoma, pericarditis, severe hepatic necrosis, and uterine carcinoma.
