Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube(s). (Grossly hemolyzed, icteric, or lipemic specimen is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 0.5 mL (pediatric volume:  0.2 mL) of serum refrigerated.

Note:  A speckled-top serum gel tube (s) or a plain, red-top tube(s) is also acceptable.

Reference Values

Reported as positive, negative, or equivocal

Positive:  presence of detectable IgG antibodies indicates response to vaccine or infection sometime in past with this virus. These individuals are considered immune to mumps virus infection.

Negative:  absence of detectable antibodies indicates lack of specific immune response to vaccine or previous exposure to mumps virus.

Equivocal:  patients with equivocal results should be retested if clinically indicated.
