Methodology

Microscopic Examination

Used to determine the presence of calcium pyrophosphate crystals, monosodium urate crystals, or other crystals present in body fluid specimens.

Specimen Requirements

Submit body fluid (minimum volume:  3 mL) in a plain, red-top tube(s),  a screw-capped, sterile, plastic container, or a sodium heparin (dark green tube).   Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only. Do not refrigerate.

Note:  1. Oxalate, powdered EDTA, and lithium heparin should not be used as anticoagulants because they can produce crystalline structures resembling monosodium urate crystals.

2. Indicate specimen source on container and request form.
