Methodology
Enzyme Immunoassay (EIA)
Useful to detect presence of Giardia specific antigens in stool specimens.
Note: This is a sensitive EIA to screen for Giardia antigens that may be present in fecal specimens. These are one of the most prevalent parasites detected in this geographical area.

Specimen Requirements
Submit only 1 of the following specimens:
Preserved Stool
1. Submit stool in 10% formalin preservative or a Carey Blair collection container.
2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
Unpreserved Stool
1. Submit 1 mL to 2 mL of stool in a screw-capped, sterile container.
2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), date and actual time of collection, and type of specimen.
3. Send specimen refrigerated. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.

Reference Values
Negative for Giardia lamblia antigen
