Test Code LAB294 Complete Blood Count (CBC)

Reporting Title

CBC

Methodology

Automated Multiparameter Hematology Analyzer

Includes WBC, RBC, hemoglobin (Hgb), hematocrit (Hct), MCV, MCHC, RDW, and platelet count.

Used to evaluate ABO incompatibilities, anemia, hemolytic disease of the newborn, leukemia, polycythemia, reaction to inflammation and infections, and state of hydration.

Performing Laboratory

OhioHealth Laboratory Services-RMH, GMC, DH, DMH, MGH, GMH, HMH, GCMH, DHC, WECC, PMC, MH, SH, BH and OMH Core Laboratories.

Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s), and send EDTA whole blood. Mix by gently inverting 8 times. Forward unprocessed whole blood promptly at ambient temperature.

Note:  1. Hgb results may be falsely elevated if specimen is grossly lipemic.

2. Increased WBCs and the presence of cold agglutinins may affect results.

3. Platelet clumping may cause spuriously decreased counts.
