Note:  Platelet count is included in LAB294 “Complete Blood Count (CBC).”

Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s), and send EDTA whole blood. Mix by gently inverting 8 times. Do not centrifuge. Forward unprocessed whole blood promptly at ambient temperature only. Do not refrigerate.

Note:  Platelet clumping may cause spuriously decreased counts.

Newborn-1 week:  100-478 K/mcL

2 weeks:  150-400 K/mcL

Critical values

Red category conditions complete alert within 1 hour (initial result only)

Neonates:  <50 K/mcL or >1,000 K/mcL

Inpatients:  <50 K/mcL or >1,000 K/mcL

Outpatients:  <50 K/mcL or >1,000 K/mcL

Oncology patients:  <15 K/mcL or >1,000 K/mcL

Note:  First instance = no critical value in the same result range (high vs. low) in the last 5 days.
