Important Note

Please see the Coagulation Limitations under resources for effect of Anticoagulant drugs in this test.

Additional Codes

47116

Reporting Title

Heparin Anti-Xa Assay, P

Methodology

Chromogenic Method

Used to detect the therapeutic range for low molecular weight heparin (LMWH) or unfractionated heparin.

Performing Laboratory

OhioHealth Laboratory Services-RMH Core Coagulation

Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a light blue-top (citrate) tube(s). Spin down, remove plasma, spin plasma again, and place 1 mL of citrate platelet-poor plasma into a plastic vial. If processed within 4 hours, the specimen does not need to be double spun. Send specimen frozen.

Note:  Double-centrifuged specimen is critical for accurate results as platelet contamination may cause spurious results.

Specimen Transport Temperature

Frozen/Refrigerate NO/Ambient NO

Only frozen if specimen is not run within 4 hours.

Reference Values

Therapeutic range for LMWH varies with type and manufacturer, but it is typically between 0.4 IU/mL and 1.0 IU/mL. The therapeutic range for unfractionated heparin is 0.3-0.7 IU/mL.
