Qualitative Solubility Test
Used for identification of sickling hemoglobin.
Note: Appearance of hemoglobin S is genetically delayed and does not begin to become evident until after 3 months of age, and maximum levels are not achieved until 5 to 6 months of age.

Specimen Requirements
Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s), and send EDTA whole blood refrigerated. Mix gently by inverting 8 times. Do not centrifuge.

Negative
If sickle cell screen is positive, hemoglobin electrophoresis will be performed for confirmation.
