Specimen Requirements
Whole Blood
Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube. Send whole blood sample.
Whole blood can be stored at 2º - 8º C for 48hours.

Reference Values
Negative
Most patients develop detectable antibodies within 3 weeks of exposure. Some may require as long as 3 months. Fifty percent of children under 4 years may remain heterophile negative. The intramuscular heterophile antibody may be positive in leukemia, cytomegalovirus, Burkitt’s lymphoma, rheumatoid arthritis, viral hepatitis, and Toxoplasma gondii. Epstein-Barr virus specific laboratory testing may be helpful in these cases.
