Please see the Coagulation Limitations under resources for effect of Anticoagulant drugs in this test.

Testing Algorithm:

If free protein S is below normal range (<50%), total protein S will be performed.

Method Name:
Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA)

Performing Laboratory

OhioHealth Laboratory Services-RMH Core Coagulation

Specimen Requirements

Draw a full, light blue-top (citrate) tube. Spin down, remove plasma, spin plasma again, and place 2 aliquots of  1 mL of citrated platelet-poor plasma in plastic vials. (Glass vial is not acceptable.) Pour-off vial should be no more than 1/3 full. Freeze immediately at ≤40° and send specimen frozen.

Note:  1. This assay requires its own specimen.

2. Double-centrifuged specimen is critical for accurate results as platelet contamination may cause spurious results.

3. If patient is being treated with Coumadin®, this should be noted. Coumadin® will lower protein S.
