Specimen Requirements
Draw blood in a gold-top or a speckled-top serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 1 mL (pediatric volume: 0.2 mL) of serum refrigerated.
Note: Plain, red-top tube(s) is also acceptable.

Reference Values
Negative: <6.0 IU/mL
Equivocal: 6-7.9 IU/mL
Positive: ≥8.0 IU/mL
A negative result does not always exclude infection. Specimen may have been drawn very early in disease. Results from immunosuppressed patients may be difficult to interpret due to diminished immune response. Positive results may not be valid if patient has received blood in the past several months.
