Reporting Title
Human Growth Hormone
Methodology
Beckman Coulter DXI 800 Immunoassay System.
Growth hormone (GH), produced by anterior pituitary, is involved in protein and glucose metabolism. Disorders include dwarfism, gigantism, and acromegaly. Various stimulation and suppression tests may be necessary to diagnose these diseases.

Specimen Requirements
Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube(s) from a fasting patient. Green-top [heparin] tube is also acceptable.
Note:
1. If multiple specimens are drawn, label each specimen with corresponding draw time and sequence number.
2. A speckled-top serum gel tube (s) or a plain, red-top tube(s) is also acceptable.
Specimen Stability Information
Specimen Type | Temperature | Time |
---|---|---|
Serum | Refrigerated | 2 days |
Ambient | 8 hours | |

Reference Values
Children 1-12 months: No Reference Range Established
Males: 0.01-0.97 ng/mL
Females: 0.01-3.61 ng/mL
GH secretion is episodic and pulsatile. Transient levels up to 40 ng/mL have been seen in healthy individuals. Between pulses, levels tend to be low.
Note: 1. Patients on GH therapy may develop antibodies which interfere with the assay.
2. Patients who have received mouse monoclonal antibodies may develop human anti-mouse antibodies (HAMA) which interfere with this assay.
