Bone Marrow Biopsy Procedure
Methodology
Bone Marrow Aspirate and Biopsy Obtained by Aspiration with Jamshidi Needle
Used to evaluate bone marrow morphology, hematopoiesis, myeloid/erythroid ratio, megakaryocytes, cellularity, and possible neoplasms.

Bone marrow aspirate smears, biopsy, and peripheral blood and smears are required for this test.
Bone Marrow Aspirate Smear and Biopsy
Collection is performed by physician assisted by medical technologist from the Core Laboratory.
Five to 7 bone marrow aspirate smears containing spicules and/or biopsy specimen preserved in zinc formalin solution.
Note: 1. Complete blood count (CBC) results, patient diagnosis, reason for performing bone marrow, date and diagnosis of previous bone marrows, and date of chemotherapy or radiation therapy are required for processing.
2. Send smears in separate package from formalin containers.
Peripheral Blood and Smears
Draw peripheral blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s). Mix by gently inverting 8 times. Submit 2 peripheral smears along with EDTA peripheral blood. Forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
Note: 1. CBC results, patient diagnosis, reason for performing bone marrow, date and diagnosis of previous bone marrows, and date of chemotherapy or radiation therapy are required for processing.
2. Send smears in separate package from formalin containers.
