Specimen Requirements
Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube(s). Spin down and send 1.5 mL (pediatric volume: 0.2 mL) of serum refrigerated.
Note: A speckled-top serum gel tube (s) or a plain, red-top tube(s) is also acceptable.

Patients with symptoms of Lyme disease and negative results should be retested in 4 to 6 weeks. Patients in early stages of disease or those who have received antibiotics may not produce measurable antibodies. Crossreactivity may occur with relapsing fever, Rocky Mountain spotted fever (Rickettsia rickettsii), spirochete diseases, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematous, Epstein-Barr virus, cytomegalovirus, or syphilis, therefore, positive results are confirmed with Western blot assay.
