Qualitative results of EBV antibodies aid in diagnosis of infectious mononucleosis. The presence of VCA IgG antibodies indicate a past infection with EBV. The presence of VCA IgM antibodies indicate a primary recent infection with EBV. EBNA antibodies develop 6 to 8 weeks after primary infection. Over 90% of the normal adult population have antibodies to VCA IgG and EBNA.

Specimen Requirements

Draw blood in a gold-top serum gel tube(s). (Contaminated, hemolyzed, or icteric specimen is not acceptable.) Spin down and send 1 mL of serum refrigerated.

Note:  A speckled-top serum gel tube (s) or a plain, red-top tube(s) is also acceptable.
