Specimen Requirements
Draw blood in a lavender-top (EDTA) tube(s). (Serum is not acceptable.) Invert gently to mix blood. Centrifuge, pipet off plasma, centrifuge again, and pipet off 1 mL of EDTA plasma. Send specimen refrigerated.
The plasma needs separated from the cells within a strict 2 hours of collection.
Note: 1. If possible, specimen should be second tube drawn.
2. Blood should be free-flowing.

0.0-0.03 g/dL
Presence of excess hemoglobin in plasma is a reliable sign of intravascular hemolysis only if one can be sure that lysis has not been caused by phlebotomy or specimen processing.
