Specimen Requirements
Acceptable Specimens:
Bronchial fluid, bronchial washing, bronchoalveolar lavage, chest fluid, chest tube drainage, empyema, endotracheal specimen, fresh lung tissue, induced sputum, lingula (lung), lung biopsy, pericardial fluid or tissue, pleura, pleural fluid, protected catheter brush, sputum, thoracentesis fluid, tracheal secretion, transbronchial biopsy, or transtracheal aspirate
1. Submit specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container.
2. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), MR# or DOB, date and actual time of collection and type of specimen.
3. Send specimen refrigerated. Maintain sterility and forward promptly.
Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing.
Tissue:
1. Collect tissue aseptically with a minimum of contamination from surrounding tissues and/or secretions.
2. Place specimen in a screw-capped, sterile container.
3. Do not allow tissue to dry.
4. Label container with patient’s name (first and last), MR# or DOB, date and actual time of collection and type of specimen.
5. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature only.
