Test Code LAB90336 Glucose, Tolerance Test, 2 Hour Postprandial, Plasma or Serum

Important Note

Sample is drawn 2 hours after a meal.  A fasting sample is not required, but if requested by a physician the fasting glucose needs to be ordered and drawn after an 8 to 14 hour fast and before the meal. 

LAB81 for a fasting glucose; LAB90336 2 hours after a meal. 

NOTE: Glucola must be consumed within 10 minutes.

NOTE: Specimen cannot be collected prior to the time due and no more than 10 minutes past the time due.

Methodology

Done to check for diabetes, monitor treatment of diabetes, or determine if an abnormally low blood sugar level (hypoglycemia) is present. A test to measure blood levels of insulin and a protein called C-peptide may be done along with a blood glucose test to determine the cause of hypoglycemia.

Patient Preparation

1.  Salicylates, diuretics, and anticonvulsants decrease insulin secretion.

 

Performance of Test

Draw blood exactly 2 hours after you start eating a meal.

Preferred:

Draw blood in a  grey-top (potassium oxalate/sodium fluoride) tube. Send whole blood.
Note:  1.  Label specimens appropriately to indicate specimen timing.

 

Alternate: 

Serum or plasma

Draw blood in a plain, red-top; gold-top; or speckled-top serum gel tube(s) or a green mint top(Heparin) gel tube.  Spin down and send 1 mL of serum or plasma refrigerated. It is important to separate cells from serum as soon as possible..

Note:  1. Indicate serum or plasma on the specimen.
            2. Label specimen appropriately to indicate collection timing.
