Specimen Requirements

Send both the urinalysis specimen and a urine culture specimen for this test

Urinalysis specimen

Minimum of 10 mL of urine from a random urine collection in a screw-capped, sterile, plastic urine container or a 10 mL BD yellow-top round bottom urine tube. No preservative. Specimens should be received within 2 hours of collection. Samples are acceptable up to 12 hours if refrigerated at 2-8 Maintain sterility and forward promptly whenever possible.

Yellow with speckled red top urine collection tubes are stable for 72 hours.

Culture specimen:

 Urine submitted in a BD Collection Kit (preserved grey top) is acceptable for testing up to 72 hours
