Methodology

Macroscopic and Microscopic Analysis

Includes volume measurement, motility, sperm count, and viscosity.

Used for infertility studies and diagnosis of azoospermia and oligospermia.

Specimen Requirements

Specimen must arrive within 30 to 60 minutes of collection (maximum:  2 hours if kept warm).

 

Collect entire ejaculate (minimum volume:  1 mL) in a clean, dry, glass or plastic container. (Specimen collected in a condom is not acceptable.) Specimen must be kept at body temperature (37° C). Forward promptly to laboratory.

Note:  1. To keep specimen warm, place container inside clothing, next to skin.

2. Patient should have 3 days of sexual abstinence (ejaculation) at time of semen collection for accurate results.

3. Date and time of collection are required on request form for processing.

Liquefaction:  liquefied in less than 30 minutes

Normal or average range:  ≥ 15 M/mL

Viscosity:  normal

Motility: Forward progress  ≥32%

Note:  Low temperatures during transport may decrease motility of sperm.
