Methodology

Aerobic culture and gram stain, with reflex to FilmArry amplified nucleic acid by PCR if indicated by parameters listed below:

  • CSF Cell Count >5 WBC/mcL
  • Pediatric patient <17 years old
  • Special request by physician, if CSF ≤ 5 cells/mcL

This test is orderable for CSF obtained by lumbar puncture only. When ordering this test, a CSF Body Fluid Cell Count must also be ordered.  The CSF Bacterial/Viral Detection by PCR BioFire FilmArray test is FDA approved for lumbar puncture CSF only, and targets the following organisms:

Specimen Requirements

1.  Aseptically collect 1 mL of spinal fluid in a screw-capped, sterile vial. 

2. Label container with patients first and last name, MR# or DOB, date and actual time of collection and type of specimen.

3. Maintain sterility and forward promptly at ambient temperature.

Note: Specimen source is required on request form for processing.

Transport information for sites other than Riverside Campus:

Receive test if previously ordered in LIS. Order test, print labels, and label specimen

Create a Room Temperature micro packing list only for this specimen and place it in the pocket of a special "green" biohazard bag with a label attached to the front specifying:

 

  BIOFIRE STAT TEST, DELIVER DIRECTLY TO RMH MICRO LAB

  Call a STAT courier if the next courier run is more than 60 minutes from the time of receipt

Culture follow-up: No growth after 72 hours
