Specimen Requirements
Preferred:
Nasal or nasopharyngeal specimen placed in Viral Universal Transport Media.
Alternate:
Oropharyngeal placed in Viral Universal Transport Media: Accepted only in patients when other types of sample collection is not possible. Can only be run on the Roche 8800 and Diasorin platforms at RMH.
BAL, Tracheal: Can only be tested on the Diasorin platform at RMH.
Specimen Collection
Nasopharyngeal Swab Sample:
Insert the sterile swab into either nostril, passing it into the posterior nasopharynx. Rotate swab by firmly brushing against the nasopharynx several times. Remove and place the swab into the tube containing 3 ml of viral transport medium. Break swab at the indicated break line and cap the specimen collection tube tightly.
Nasal Swab Sample:
Insert a nasal swab 1 to 1.5 cm into a nostril. Rotate the swab against the inside of the nostril for 3 seconds while applying pressure with a finger to the outside of the nostril. Repeat on the other nostril with the same swab. Remove and place the swab into the tube containing 3 ml of viral transport medium. Break swab at the indicated break line and cap the specimen collection tube tightly.

Specimen Transport and Storage
Specimens should be tested as soon as possible after collection. The UTM sample is stable for up to 4 hours at 18-25ºC and up to 72 hours at 2-8ºC.
Note: Specimens tested on the Roche 8800 at RMH are stable up to 48 hours at 18-25ºC
