Important Note

If ordering multiple tests, this test must have its own specimen. Other tests ordered on the same specimen/order with this test will be canceled.

 This test should be requested for individuals with a pustular or vesicular rash that could be consistent with monkeypox, especially:

1) Those with a travel history to central or west African countries, parts of Europe where monkeypox has been reported, or other geographic areas reporting monkeypox cases in the month prior to illness onset

2) Men who report sexual contact with other men and who present with lesions in the genital or perianal area

3) Those who report contact with a suspected or confirmed case of monkeypox.

Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)

This real-time polymerase chain reaction test provides qualitative detection of non-variola Orthopoxvirus (ie, monkeypox) DNA in swab specimens of skin lesions present in individuals with suspected monkeypox. Specimen Requirements

Specimen Type: Lesion Swab

Collection Container/Tube: BD CultureSwab sterile, media- and charcoal-free, rayon-tipped double swabs

Submission Container/Tube: Viral Culture Media (VCM), Viral Transport Media (VTM), Universal Transport Media (UTM), or equivalent

Specimen Volume: 1 Swab

 

Collection Instructions:

  1. Swab the pustule/lesion vigorously and place the swab in 3 mL Viral Culture Media (VCM), Viral Transport Media (VTM), Universal Transport Media (UTM), or equivalent.
    • A dry rayon may be used but should be placed in viral media ASAP. 
  2. Include Patient Race, Ethnicity, Specimen type (source), and Anatomic Location specimen was collected.
  3. Ship at frozen or refrigerated temperature.

Note: Each individual specimen submitted should be transported in its own sealed bag. Multiple specimens collected on a single patient should be submitted separately.

4. Do not place or send swab in glass tubes, vacutainer tubes, tubes with push caps, or paper swab sleeves.

5. Refrigerate or freeze (at -20° C or lower) specimens within 1 hour after collection.
